All About Black holes Part-4

Research Overloaded

A black hole is a true “hole” in space: Anything that crosses the edge of the hole – called the “horizon” of the hole – is swallowed forever. For this reason, black holes are considered an edge of space, a one-way exit door from our universe; nothing inside a black hole can ever communicate with our universe again, even in principle.

However black holes are even stranger than that. As you get closer to a black hole, the flow of time slows down, compared to flow of time far from the hole. (According to Einstein’s theory, anymassive body, including the Earth, produces this effect. Earth’s gravity is so weak that the slowing of time is not noticeable, but the effect has been confirmed using sensitive instruments. For example, at sea level you age one-billionth of a second less every year than you would if you lived on top of…

All About Black holes Part-3

Black holes can generate energy more efficiently than our Sun.

The material that is nearest to the fringe of the event horizon orbits and moves more rapidly, it heats up to billions of degrees Farenheit, which has the ability to convert the mass around it into energy known as black body radiation.

To compare, nuclear fission converts about 0.7% of mass into energy whereas a black hole converts 10% of mass into energy. The difference is far too big.

The disc of a black hole becomes extremely hot and stars radiate light allowing us to observe it before it is swallowed up. By analysing the motion of the disc and using the enamated light from it scientists estimate the mass of a black hole.

Theoretically if we could produce a sound louder than 1100db concentrated on a single point in space, we could create a black hole. But it is easier said than done. Firstly decibels are logarithmic units that means that 20db is not twice as 10db it’s actually 10 times more powerful, so 1100db is 10 followed by 109 zeroes times as powerful. Secondly, a sound of that magnitude would require 10^98 watt/square metre.

You could theoretically turn anything into a black hole.

If you shrunk our Sun down to a size of only 3.7 miles (6 km) across, for example, then you would have compressed all of the mass in our sun down to an incredibly small space, making it extremely dense and also making a black hole.

If you could squeeze earth down to the size of a wedding ring it would become a black hole. You could even become…

Some think black holes are like cosmic vacuums that suck in the space around them, when in fact, black holes are like any other object in space, albeit with an extremely strong gravitational field.

If you replace the Sun with a black hole of equal mass, the Earth would not get sucked in, it would continue orbiting the black hole as it orbits the Sun.

Black holes have so strong gravitational field that can even bend light, the fastest thing known to exist in the three dimensional planes. Black holes can even bend space and maybe distort the dimensions in ways we still don’t know and maybe will never know…

Companion stars shed some of their mass in the form of stellar wind and the material in that wind then falls in to the grip of their hungry neighbour, a black hole.

In the ancient Greek mythology, the Minotaur is a monster with the head of a bull and the body of a man that lives in the centre of a great spiral labyrinth and devours anyone foolish or lost enough to come near.

At the centre of our galaxy and quite possibly at the centre of all spiral galaxies, there also live monsters that swallow anything and everything in their reach. These monsters are known as black holes, which may conceal some clues to the greatest unsolved mysteries of the universe.

There are two types of black holes. The mass of an ordinary black hole is the remains of a star about 25 to 100 times more massive than our sun. Another type of black hole can become so large with accretion of matter, especially during early stages of galaxy formation, that it’s mass can equal that of 10 billion suns.
