5 Ways to Squeeze in a Bit More Movement into Your Busy Day

Are you really aware of how much you are sitting throughout the day? At work, at home on the couch, in the car, during meetings and even sitting and staring at your smartphone. It’s no secret that many of us are really sitting much more than we are moving which is so bad for our health!
The good news is we can take action and fit in periodic bursts of activity throughout the day. Here are 5 ways I fit in more movement in my day:

1. Park and walk

If you’re not one to wake up early for a morning run or workout, simply park your car a bit farther when you get to work and walk. Don’t worry if you can’t find the closest spot to the door, aim for the farthest spot. I recently watched a video clip online about successful people, and one thing they have in common is that they get up and get moving first thing. If you’re not quite there yet, use your morning walk to the office door as an opportunity to move a bit more — every step counts!

2. Be old-fashioned and take the stairs

Imagine what the world would be like without any elevators or escalators. Gasp! Somehow our ancestors did it, and we can do it, too! I was always an elevator girl since the Runtastic office is all the way on the 4th and 5th floor, but I have been really good about taking the stairs and climbing what feels like a million steps multiple times per day. The result: other’s join too! Nailed it!

3. Walking meetings

Who says you have to just sit in a meeting room in order to have a meeting? Of course, if there’s a presentation or a lot of people, it might make sense to have a formal meeting, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. When the weather is nice, our Content Marketing team will go outside for our weekly meeting — we call it the “Walkie Talkie.” 🙂

4. Get up!

Standing desks, treadmill desks, getting up periodically to stretch or make a phone call — however you like… just get up! Studies show that employees who get up regularly can actually lose up to 4 kg (8.8 lbs) in as little as 6 months! My favorite is the treadmill desk that we have here at our office. I try to spend 30 minutes per week working from the treadmill desk.

5. Get your colleagues on board #strongertogether

Here at Runtastic, team spirit and working (out) together is top priority. Here at the office, we’re often doing lunch workouts, morning runs, Yoga and Zumba. And today, for example, some people are getting together to do 100 burpees before lunchtime. It might sound crazy, and it doesn’t always have to be burpees, but it’s important that you try to cultivate that positive and active energy in your workplace since most of us are spending quite some time there. If nothing like this exists in your workplace, create it! #strongertogether
