Timber! Your yoga mat could be actively sabotaging your balancing poses

City Women & co

December 07, 2018 at 11:36AM

You?ve had your downward dog and warrior poses mastered for years, but when you put yourself into trickier situations that require some serious balancing skills, it only takes a second to fall out. So what gives? Well, according to a podiatrist, you might be able to blame your yoga mat.

In a recent episode of the Urban Wellness Clinic?s Muscle Medicine podcast, Emily Splichal, DPM, reveals the prime yoga accessory could actually be why balancing is so hard. ?When you go onto a yoga mat, you?re dampening or blocking the small nerves in the bottom of the feet,? she says.

And those nerves are crucial for mastering one-legged poses: They have quicker reaction times, making them better at sensing tiny movement changes to help keep you balanced. Unfortunately, due to the texture and thickness of mats, those nerves are often suppressed, forcing you to…

This is What Actually Happens to Your Gut When You’re Stressed Out

City Women & co

December 07, 2018 at 11:23AM

If you?ve ever gotten butterflies before a work presentation or lost your appetite after looking at your to-do list, you?ve felt the effects that stress can have on your digestive system.

Since stress in life is pretty much a given, we teamed up with Renew Life® to get to the bottom of why exactly your gut acts up when you?re at a level 10—and tapped Kaitlyn Clarke, chiropractor and functional nutritionist at Urban Wellness Clinic, to find out what to do to keep your gut health on point in spite of it.

?You cannot truly break out of the stress/gut cycle without tackling it from both directions,? Dr. Clarke says. ?You must take control of your stress level, while simultaneously improving your gut health.?

Luckily, breaking the cycle is possible if you?re proactive about it, which is why we asked Dr. Clarke to share…

Take a Shot -Facing Bipolar, Depression, Anxiety and Suicide

mindfullivingpodcastIf you are looking for a convenient way to escape crappy mainstream radio, meditate, calm down, relax your mind, self-reflect, learn and all the while be entertained, I will ALWAYS recommend listening to podcasts. Right now, I am subscribed to almost 100 podcasts and I absolutely love them all. It is probably one of my personal healthiest and most productive pastimes. If you are not yet married

If you are not yet married,
And want to be,
It is a good thing;
But you must be careful;
You must not hurry,
Else you mess up the thing;
You must take your time,
To make the story a success;
Don't meet someone today,
And get married the next day;
That, we call, blind diving;
You may hit your head
On a hard rock;
And you know what happens
When you do;
Know the one you want to take,
To make your partner for life;
Be sure it's someone
With whom you can make a happy life.
Someone who loves you and someone you love;
Someone who shares the same values like you;
And someone who is willing to do what it takes,
For a successful relationship;
Someone who is honest
Will make a better spouse
Than the one who is not;
And someone who is committed to

Jennifer Aniston is over the obsession with marriage and procreation, especially when it comes to the media and the public's speculation on her love life. "Maybe it has everything to do with what they're lacking in their own life," the "Dumplin'" star told Elle in its January 2019 issue. 6 stretches to do before bed for a better night’s sleep

City Women & co

December 02, 2018 at 01:00PM

As any wellness junkie—or, you know, human with internet access—knows, a solid bedtime routine is a #majorkey to success. And while you may have your pre-lights-out regimen down to an art (ILYSM, journaling and meditation), there?s one thing worth adding to your nighttime to-do list for the sake of better sleep: A series of evening stretches.

?Stretching should be an important part of your evening routine,? explains international yogi Claire Grieve. ?Regular stretching helps to melt away daily tension, stress and worry. Stretching your hips is particularly useful for clearing the emotional junk from the day. Stretching in a passive, restorative way will prime your body for sleep by helping you to enter a state of relaxation.?

Cycling through a few cat-cows to start your morning may be second nature, but adding a bendy element in the evening can help you chill out…

LIVING IN THE MOMENT – Being Present With Bipolar Disorder

Take a Shot -Facing Bipolar, Depression, Anxiety and Suicide

quotes-about-enjoying-life99% percent of the time, I am NOT HERE.

I may be looking you dead in the eyes during a conversation, dancing at a party, laughing at somebody’s bad joke, or in the middle of sex with (who knows, really Lol) at night. But, I am not there. I AM NEVER HERE. My body exists in the moment, while my mind is either tracing back to the past, or driving 900 mph into the future that my life may hold. Problem is, I am aware that I cannot control either, and yet, that is where I spend most of my life, and have been all my life.

Do you ever feel like Bipolar disorder prevents you from enjoying the moment? I actually read a great article about this very topic, which inspired me to write my own, but with my perspective and experiences.

The most common mistake to make when doing the side lunge

City Women & co

December 07, 2018 at 07:36AM

Nailing a move like the lunge can make you feel like a rockstar. By simply stepping forwards or backwards, you can work your quads, hamstrings, calves, and glutes all at once—the perfect addition to a leg day workout, with endless variations. You can even do it with weights, incorporating bicep or hammer curls as you lunge back. And then there are Swan Lake-style ballerina lunges, that whole lunge-around-the-clock sequence from Ariana Grande?s trainer, and—a basic but highly beneficial upgrade—side lunge.

Side lunges are ideal because they take the typical forward-and-back movement to a lateral level, which then works your butt even more. (Yes, please.) The thing is, while they look simple—you just side-step and bend, right?—there are easy mistakes to make.

Take it from Obé fitness trainer Megan Roup, who happens to be leading our Well+Good Retreat in Miami later this month…

How to be alone without being lonely, regardless of your relationship status

City Women & co

December 07, 2018 at 07:45AM

Christina Aguilera and Ricky Martin once said (or rather, crooned), “Nobody wants to be lonely.” And that sentiment rings especially true around the holidays. Whether you’re single and wishing you had a cuffing-season partner, or you’re in a committed relationship and various obligations (or worse, family drama) are keeping you apart, the vibe of loneliness can be pervasive.

It’s even harder to avoid these feels when everything about the holiday season—like cheesy cable movies and nonstop seasonal music—practically screams, “Isn’t love the best?!? You should be in it, and it should be picture perfect—don?t forget!” Psychotherapist Lise Schiffer, LCSW, validates that this stress indeed feels very real. “There is enormous social pressure to feel cheerful and social during the holidays,” says.

It?s also easy to feel like everyone around you is smitten, enjoying warm and cozy feelings of love—even if that?s totally…

Ah, the season of giving…and receiving. While the holiday joy may be as palpable as the sweat in a SoulCycle locker room, nothing deflates the good vibes quicker than unwrapping a terrible gift. You don?t doubt that your Great Aunt Pearl or work wife or new hot flingmeant well when selecting a prezzie for you, but that doesn?t change the reality that you now need to give an Oscars-worthy performance and matching acceptance speech to cover up the fact that you hate that necklace, or that hand-knit throw blanket, or that Kindle you?ll truly never use, or that sweater that is just so…yolky (you hate yellow, okay?).

Instead of just grinning (through your tears) and bearing it, wouldn?t it be better for all parties if you could turn your bad present into something you?ll actually enjoy? Because, hey, that?s kind of whole point…

A beginner’s guide to building stamina and boosting your endurance

Great post ! valuable information for a beginner !

City Women & co

December 07, 2018 at 07:49AM

Whether you’re just embarking on your fitness journey or planning to get your rear in gear so that you can run your first marathon, increasing stamina is a good goal to have.

Why? For starters, improving your physical fitness involves increasing your body’s efficiency. And stamina is key to maximizing the productivity of your heart, lungs, and muscles.

So stamina is important, but what is it, exactly?

Stamina, which can be used to describe both physical and mental pursuits, is defined as the ability to push yourself to your maximum potential for a given length of time. When you set out to build your stamina, you’re working to increase the period of time during which you’re able to perform at the peak of your abilities. Stamina differs from endurance in that the latter is actually about increasing the duration of your workout not

And Sometimes I Wonder (poems)

Very good poem !

IMG_1103 (2)

The challenge from Jilly over at dVerse is to write a poem using repetition, the snag is that the poem has to be written to a particular form; the forms being either villanelle, terzanelle, pantoum, triolet or chant. Check out Jilly’s fascinating post for examples and definitions of these forms. I have to admit, having never studied poetry beyond high school (and not much at that) I find these forms intriguing and a little daunting, so I decided to go for what I thought was the easy one – chant; this proved to be a bit more elusive than I had imagined. Here are 3 attempts, the first one is new, the other two are edits of previous posts.

Social Pandering

R. Michael

In a world of partisan politics, debates about political correctness, and what content should or should not be in a work of fiction, it is difficult to craft stories.  Intent no longer appears to be a concern, nor age of a book when it comes to offending some people.  Years ago, this was a topic I touched on, but it is just as relevant today as it was then, if not more.

If you’ve followed my blog since it’s inception in 2014, you know that I feel it is never a story-teller’s job to pander, or to throw in content for the sake of sales.  We need to be true to the story.  After all, once a story becomes a published work it ceases to be solely ours.  Stories take on a life of their own, throwing in unnecessary political garbage or ideology severely impacts the work.  This is the…

But once it gets to Sunday afternoon, my mind naturally starts shifting to thinking about the week ahead. Like, what have we got to do? What what do we need to make sure we get done this week? Y’know, what projects? Where are we at in…

As the day wears on and you make your way home, you tell yourself over and over like a broken record how you need to put your head down, so to speak, and finally get around to doing that one thing you need to do.

You get home, put your bag down, and… fast-forward a few hours. Before you know it, it’s time for bed.

What happened?

Well, you lost all the energy you needed; your mind effectively gave up before you even started.

A lack of energy can go beyond feeling physically tired, it can permeate into what’s known as “mental tiredness”. And it’s a real thing, affecting almost everyone for various reasons. But what if I told you…

Here’s What Dietitians Actually Eat For Dessert

City Women & co

December 07, 2018 at 05:23AM

It sure might seem like dietitians and nutritionists have never taken a bite of pie or enjoyed a slice of pumpkin bread in their lives. After all, they encourage us to avoid sugar, right?

But really, even though dietitians embrace all things wellness (and everything they post on Instagram looks sooo healthy), that doesn’t mean they lead lives completely devoid of tasty treats. The reality: they get a sweet tooth just like the rest of us, and when they do, they eat dessert—plain and simple. And not just a nibble of something halfway tolerable to kick the craving, but a treat they find truly delicious. Seriously—fudge bites and no-bake cookies, included!

“It?s not realistic to go through life never enjoying dessert, so let go of any guilt,” says Cynthia Sass, RD, CSSD. “Choose desserts you enjoy that offer some nourishment, and won?t make you…

Well, not the writing part. That, as I often say, is easy. It is the rest of it, especially when you are an indie writer, that really ties you up in knots. “I have never once looked in the mirror

I think it’s long overdue.”

I have never once looked in the mirror and said, “I love you.” Perhaps I was afraid I didn’t deserve it. Or maybe there just was no point. But there is. And the more I think about it, the more I’ve realized that I do. I do love myself. After everything my body and mind did to protect me and keep the good alive — along with the hope. I survived. That is something worth loving — especially since that person is me.

How to actually help a loved one who seems depressed over the holidays

This season may be your favorite time of year (spiked hot chocolate, awesome-yet-terrible holiday movies on Netflix, all the good vibes in the air). But if you come home for the holidays to find someone you love is dealing with depression, all that can change in an instant.

Maybe you picked up a few signs on the phone beforehand: a comment about exhaustion here, a tone of sadness there. But there’s nothing like spending significant time with your mom, dad, brother or sister to really see all the red flags (such as lack of energy, sadness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in favorite activities).

The holidays can be a vulnerable period for people, so a family member’s symptoms of depression may become especially clear. “Some people are affected by less sunlight and more gray days—plus this season…

Why did you marry your spouse? Or what will make you marry someone?

Many marriages are so rough, you are forced to ask how they came about in the first place. Why do people marry the person they marry? If you are married, why did you marry the person you are married to and not someone else?

The reason we marry the person we marry determines how our marriage turns out to be.

What are some of the reasons people may marry someone?

  1. Love: Some people marry a particular person because they love the person and think they will be happy with the person as husband and wife.
  2. Money: Some people marry because of money. What attracts them to the person they marry is the person is rich and they want to enjoy the riches.
  3. Prestige: Some people look for their spouse in a highly placed family so that they can have the honor of a big connection.
  4. Family: Some people marry to…

Why Dave Ramsey is right about using cash

Uncommon Financial Sense

I have listened to Dave Ramsey since late 2007. My husband found his TV show on Fox Business one night. He came down the stairs and said “there is this guy on TV you might like”. So I watched and was hooked. Since then the TV show went off the air but in the interim I found the podcasts and listen to them regularly.

Dave Ramsey is a huge advocate of using cash and rages against credit card use. He has rational and logical arguments against this. I agree that they are really are a convenience.

In early 2008 we decided to make the switch from using credit cards to cash. I had used credit cards since I reached theoretical adulthood at 18. I thought it would be a minor change and in some ways it was, but not in others. Here is what I discovered when I made the switch.

Breaching The Ordinary

Photo by Ashley Batz

Breaking free from the ordinary, even if only for a brief moment, we experience an intense feeling of relief and can let go of any previously held fears and assumptions of what would happen if we did overcome the ‘barrier’, whether its material, emotional, or mental. Simply getting away from the trance of technology for a few hours and spending that time in Nature is a breach of the trappings of civilization that can suffocate us and prevent us from connecting to the Earth.

It is time to take a break! Make it a point to get outside. Have you become attached to your surroundings, making an illusion of safety? Remember, it is not these ‘things’ that make you feel safe, it is the familiarity you have imbued in your surroundings which have generated this false sense of security. Take time away from the familiar, it…

Saudade: The Love That Remains

When it comes to the word Saudade, there are plenty of things that come in mind. But what about this word or expression that led these artists, musicians, and director to make so many projects named after it?

Being nostalgic for a time that you didn’t experience can be defined by cascading reminiscence bump, a phenomena when people not only resonate to the events from their own youth but the events from their grandparents and parents youth as well but as a form of musical memory. But Saudade is somewhat quite opposite of cascading reminiscence bump or reminiscence bump in general. It is the longing for a time that someone once experienced and loved fondly but know that they might never experience it again. It’s…

The 4 Stages You Go Through Before Enjoying Exercise

This tips will definitely help anyone start exercising regularly !

Exercise and Health

This article was inspired by the benefits of exercise.

Like most things, you won’t enjoy exercise that much at the beginning. As time goes on, though, it will start to be your escape from a life of stress, pressure and monotony.

So how do you make yourself start enjoying exercise? The truth is, it happens naturally over time.

I’ve broken the cycle that most people go through into 4 simple stages that will help you understand how exercise transforms from your own worst enemy into a daily liberation.

The mental cycle of exercise enjoyment

Stage 1: Fear, dread and discomfort

This stage starts on the day of your first exercise session. If it’s in the evening, you spend the most of your day trying to motivate yourself to stick to your plan. If it’s in the morning, you try to distract yourself from the fact that you are missing out…

Sometimes I Cry by 2Pac Shakur

2Pac Shakur – one of the briliant artist of his decade !

My Name is Jamie. My Life in Prison

Sometimes I Cry

Sometimes when I’m alone
I cry because I’m on my own
The tears I cry R bitter and warm
They flow with life but take no form

I would cry among my treasured friend
But who do you know that stops that long
to help another carry on
The world moves fast and it would rather pass u by
than 2 stop and c what makes u cry
It’s painful and sad and sometimes I cry
and no one cares about why.
