As I write this, I’m visiting home in the Southeast, where we are bracing for a winter storm. There is a definite chill in the air, and when I awoke this morning, I was met with a craving for a steaming mug of hot cocoa. However, upon opening the fridge, I discovered a nearly-empty carton of milk. Though the grocery store is not far, I was in no mood to join throngs of shoppers in frowning at the empty shelves of bread and milk that inevitably accompany the anticipation of snow in this part of the country.

From childhood through college, I single-handedly kept the dairy industry in business (an exaggeration, but not too far from the truth). I was daily milk drinker: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
